Ancient Infinity Orchestra are a nine-piece ensemble based in Leeds.
As active participants in Leeds’ music scene, the inspiration behind the groups’ inception was to distance itself from the perhaps overtly technical aspects of academic music and to find expression in compositions inspired by elemental forces, social politics and devotional music, whilst retaining a sense of joy and exploration through improvisations that run the gamut from singing bowl and gong soundscapes to full band conversations; from a whisper to a roar.
The current lineup: Drums, Double bass x2, Piano, Electric guitar, Alto saxophone/flute, Tenor saxophone/flute, Bass clarinet/flute and Violin, with all members playing percussion.
Heavy influences are Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, Art Ensemble of Chicago, African, Indian and devotional music and all that influences those musics; hence - ‘Ancient Infinity…’
Our mission statement is 1. To share our music with as many people as possible, with a hope that it can inspire, heal, or just provide a respite from any negativity associated with their daily grind.
2. To contribute to the efforts being made to give art credibility in this country, at a time where music is being removed from syllabuses, music licenses are being denied, and the ability to make a living as an artist gets harder and harder.
3. To deliver workshops on improvising with local musicians at each gig, and to work with organisations which support people at the fringes of society, using music as means to provide individuals the opportunity to express themselves in a way not predicated on social standing, ethnicity, religion or an imagined (mainstream) ’ability’, or lack thereof.
